Designer Furniture & Accessories

Sourcing furniture to dress a space can be one of the most challenging aspects of an interior design project. The designer furniture collection showcased from Simon Orrell Designs has been crafted and curated to suit a wide range of environments, from residential developments to hospitality venues, retail showrooms, and more specialist marine and aviation settings.

We design, manufacture and supply a range of artisan hand-made stools, tables, consoles, cabinets and accessories that have been expertly inlaid in unique natural materials. Much of the luxury designer furniture can be complemented with matching lamps, mirrors and artwork panels to bring added cohesion to your interiors.

Below we have presented a selection of furniture and accessories, filtered by the materials in which they are available. However, if you have something specific in mind for your space, please do get in touch to discuss the creation of a bespoke piece.

Unique Materials, Luxurious Concepts

As a designer furniture supplier, we’re always searching for stand-out designs made from unique substances. Here, we’ve listed some of the more unusual materials used to produce our designer pieces and accessories.
“I was first introduced to Nick back in 2018 and was immediately impressed by his enthusiasm and knowledge. Our working relationship evolved and led to a luxury furniture collaboration project which launched in Milan 2019. His appreciation and knowledge of materials and sustainable finishes for the interior design industry is exceptional. This very much supports our own passion and company ethics at Bethan Gray. Now with his own company brand and material offering we are excited by the prospect of working with him again in the near future.”

Parchment Furniture

This is the limed skin of an animal which has been traditionally used within manuscript writing but was revived in the 20th century as a furniture veneer. We use untanned goat hides.

Selenite Cabinet 1 - Designer Surface Solutions

Selenite/Gypsum Furniture

This is a naturally occurring gypsum with a crystalline structure. It is milky white and heavily striated to offer a wonderfully tactile surface. Imperfections are a natural characteristic of selenite and the very reason why it boasts so many variations in tone, colour and depth.

Eggshell Furniture

Crafted using an ancient Asian technique, eggshell inlay requires great skill and attention as it is handmade. Eggshell is made entirely from calcium carbonate, which is the main component of many other natural materials like seashells and pearls. Our crushed eggshell is made from chicken eggs.

Shell Furniture

We use many sustainably sourced marine shell species such as hammershell, penshell, cowrie, and violet oyster. The most famous by far is mother of pearl, which is often used to create escutcheons (key holes) on antique furniture. Each shell has a unique lustre, size and colour offering different design possibilities.

Straw Marquetry Furniture

This involves gluing patterns to furniture using flattened stems of cured rye straw. Thought to originate in Europe since the 17th century, straw marquetry was first used in a contemporary way by French designer Jean-Michel Frank in the 1930s.

Standard patterns are straight, starburst (sunburst) and facetted, but custom patterns can be created. The straw is pre-dyed before bonding and delivers a standard wax finish that can be enhanced with extra protective polyester lacquer.

Shagreen Furniture

Also known as stingray skin, shagreen is a sustainable by-product of the fishing industry. These highly durable skins have historically been used for sandpaper, covering scientific instruments and eyeglasses cases – but in the 20th century they began to be used as furniture coverings in place of wood veneers.

Each skin has a unique soft and shiny pebble-like texture.

CITES

Please note: None of the materials mentioned above, as supplied by Designer Surface Solutions, are on the CITES list (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). This is an international agreement between governments that ensures the international trade of specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.
